That's going to mess up people who registered and want to ask a question straight away.Zeph wrote:dont let anyone start a new thread until they have 1 or 2 posts(replies).

Well yeah, true...what Lugas was talking about (I think...) is the Pigeon Lounge...basically a rule-less section of the board...Death's Avatar wrote:Right....I meant with us though. 4 spam threads while doobie is out of town is not going to result in the myth community dividing...unless....

all you need to do is update the forums to the latest version. And also go to http://www.phpbbhacks.com/ or to a similar website with phpbb add ons and dl registration tweaks such as visual confirmation and etc.
I did all that in mwc04 forums and there hasnt been a new spam bot registered ever since.

Aye - Doobie's gots the goods, he just needs a little breather.Nitro wrote:all you need to do is update the forums to the latest version. And also go to http://www.phpbbhacks.com/ or to a similar website with phpbb add ons and dl registration tweaks such as visual confirmation and etc.

I sent him an ultra-simple tweak to the visual confirmation that worked on our forums. We haven't had a spam bot registration in six weeks and were getting 2-3 per day before. It's sweet.

You're providing us with a free service for our own benefit, don't you dare go apologising! We owe you just for setting up this forum, let alone running it.

But, I have a suggestion: Scrap the General Forum and create a new forum(s) called Myth Story Discussion or Chat or whatever. Spammers seem to go for General. They always did this on the Pfhorums. Now that I'm onto the Pfhorums, the admin had a great idea of getting rid of spam. RyokoTK (the admin), disabled new users from creating new topics. You could only create new topics when you entered the "Mjolnir Mark IV Cyborg" group, which is when you post at least once. To stop it from getting rid of proper newbies, he created a pinned topic called "Can't post a topic?" which allowed others to post there and then create a welcome topic.

Once again this seems like a very messy and hacky way of getting around it which is kinda undesirable. I think myrds idea would be much more effective and less confusing:Lugas wrote:I'm very sorry to hear that.Doobie wrote:Sorry guys, i DO plan to implement this stuff, but this week has turned out to be just as bad as last, my grandmother just died and I'm on my way to nelson bc for the funeral tomorrow...

myrd wrote:I think we just need to modify the registration system so that bots cant get through. For example, add a line saying "please enter the text you see here backwards". Since these bots are made for stock phpBBs, they'll fail on the custom setup. No need for SPAM forum or anything.
