singleplayer lag due to high res units?

So I'm using this bigger than normal sprites for units, and when there's 100 or more units at the same time fighting there's a small lag. Not that it crashes or that you can't play but it slows down.
Is it because of sprite sizes or maybe it always does so when lots of units are at same time on screen?
I'm using a power mac 1.5 ghz laptop with 1gig ram, so I guess it can't be the computer, and myth 1.5.1
