I have recently downloaded the 1.5.1 patch and yet it doesn't seem to respond.

To respond to what? You mean connecting to a metaserver? If so, did you click on "Servers..." and choose something from there (otherwise it will try to connect to the now-dead bungie.net). Selecting one of the PlayMyth options is a good choice, but you need to register for an account there first at http://www.playmyth.net/.
