Play Marathon on Mariusnet.com

Fire up any of Bungie's three Marathons under AlephOne and play online at Mariusnet.com.

Now all three Marathon games are free downloads from http://source.bungie.org/ , click "Download" and get the three original scenarios, get AlephOne, and get hi-res textures (optional). It is classic goodness from classic Bungie. I love classic stuff. It won't be like Xbox. It'll be classic, and updated.

To play Marathon on OS X or Windows XP/Vista, here's what you do (that is to say, here's what I did):

1) I Downloaded Marathon 1, 2, and 3 (Marathon, Durandal, and Infinity) from above link.
a) I then expanded the compressed files, each becoming their folders full of game files.

2) I then Downloaded AlephOne and expanded it. You need AlephOne to play on modern OS's.

3) Copied all the AlephOne files into each of the three Marathon game folders I had so that they each could be played in OS X (or Windows).

I also optionally downloaded the hi-res textures (see link above) and followed their installation instructions.

To play Marathon online
Simply choose either "Gather-" or "Join Network Game" and you'll be hosting or seeing games on mariusnet. You can log in automatically as a guest, or you can go to Mariusnet.com and register a free account. I had an account already from ages ago when b.net died.

Mariusnet.com and its forum is, by the way, the current thriving hub for all things Myth-related as well. Playmyth.net is no more. And that's OK.

PS, the size got large after I put in Playmyth.net,no idea why. Strange.

pps, I edited it once, and weird characters appeared. So I edited it again, and found more weird characters, so now I'm edititing it again...

*Around 99% of online Marathon games are on Infinity. But for single player you should start with Marathon 1, because you will become very frustrated if you start solo play with Marathon 3.
*The HiRes Textures, HiRes Landscapes and Shots Fired enhancements require OpenGL rendering. If you use Software rendering then they won't work for you.
*You don't need a login to play Marathon online. But if you do use one, remember you can use the same login you use to play on Mariusnet with Myth.
*Go through the game preferences carefully before playing as the defaults will give most players a headache.

I can see why this should be a sticky at the mariusnet website. I can't see any reason why this should a sticky on this site...

Yeah this is a MYTH site, not a Marathon site, or a Bungie fan club site.

You guys know I'm a Myth man, through and through. Yeah, about Marathon, I was just sayin' is all -- and I mentioned myth, so...

But also, I used to play Marathon on LANs with my pals when it was new, before Myth came out. I'd lug my nice new 60 Mhz PowerMac 6100/60 around. 32MB RAM! Not bad for System 7. They had 7100's and 8100's, though.

I really liked Marathon. It was great fun. But it wasn't until Myth that I fell in love. I love Myff. Marathon was a good friend, but Myth and I make beautiful music together, if you know what I mean, nudge nudge, wink wink (that's a youtube Monty Python skit link).

It's fun, though, now that I'm back in contact with that old pal Marathon, too.

Hey, and check it out : both times I typed in playmyth.net -- and manually made it a link to Mariusnet.com

-- it made the text bigger after it! Isn't that weird? I see from previewing this post that "playmyth" automatically gets linked to mariusnet; I wonder if my double-linking it made the text get weird. Weird. Word.

So far the googlebomb seems to be failing utterly. Well, maybe not utterly, as Project Magma is the second hit for "Play‍myth", but I'm not seeing Mariusnet on the first page either with or without a trailing .com.

I can't say whether the effort is having any effect or not, but to have 2 of the first 6 search results for 'playmyth' return links to non Playmyth myth community sites IS a good thing imo. This was not the case when PlayMyth shut down.

Search on "play myth" and 2 of the top 3 are to pages that have mariusnet links.

If you search on "myth game server" 4 of the top 5 links are to pages that have links to mariusnet.

Everything we say should point to mariusnet and Myth.
