I hold down the + key but the menu described in the manual doesn't appear.I use a Mac OSX 10.4.6 and my friend uses 10.4.10

Yes alliances are allowed.

I think it automatically turn alliances off if there are only 2 people. I know in a >2 player game, if 1 and 2 are allied and they kill 3, they automatically un-ally when 3 is eliminated. Hope that helps...
