Vista Installation...

Post by jackalwi »

So I decided to dust off my Myth 2 Soulblighter CD to get some action on my (newer) laptop.

The thing is, it won't even install.
It runs the Autoplay, when I click on "Install Myth 2: Soulblighter", the aero-glass circle-doodad-thing spins a few times (it's thinking... hard... and it hurts, apparently), then nothing happens. The disc doesn't spin, it doesn't do anything.

So I open up the disc contents, I tried every compatibility mode possible, for both the Setup.exe and Autoplay, and all of them yield the same results - zip, nada, zilch.

Using Vista Home Premium, 32bit, dual-core 1.8ghz proc, more than enough RAM. Please don't just respond with "lol get xp" or whatever.

Also note: i'm 99% sure it's not the disc, I can get it to install on my extremely aged Apple G4 500mhz dual processor 10.1 (or 10.2? i forget) rig. I just want to be able to not have to boot up that ancient computer just to get my Myth fix.

You can copy over your Myth II folder from the Mac, and then re-apply the Windows 1.6 update.

I got it to work, but how/why is beyond me.

I switched the user account from my primary one to a secondary one; log out of a windows session & log into a different user account.

Then the "Install Myth 2" button worked, as I said the how/why of it escapes me, I'm just happy it worked =D

Oh - and when trying to launch Myth 2, I got an error about not having enough free space (despite having 20gigs free, and tons of ram available for it) - fixing that was as easy as switching the compatibility mode to XP (though I suppose Win95/98 would work too).

For what it's worth, I ran into the exact same issue on Vista 64.

For some reason, the 'setup.exe' program gets 'hung', and fails to copy any information from the CD to the computer. I was unable to try your solution, since I only have one account (default Administrator).

What I ended up doing, was createing a new folder on my PC, copying some folders over from the CD, then finding a copy of the MACKW32.DLL (required for the video clips. Game would not start without it)

I then had to download the 1.6 update, to get a valid main EXE file, so I could actually run the game.

Annoying. I had no problem with either of the other titles in this series. Both Fallen Lords and Wolf Age installed without any issues.
