FOSS remake project

Hello, I am Mikademus, lead of Bright Portents, the Warhammer: Dark Omen remake project.

Bright Portents is written as a module for WARTBED, which is an FOSS engine for regimental RTT games (all these are under early but heavy development), and one goal of WARTBED is to be able to import maps and units from many games. Call it a meta-RTT if you wish.

Originally I had throught I would have to reverse-engineer the Myth game data, but then I found this project. However, I couldn't find a source code download.

Therefore I was hoping to be directed to where or how I can obtain the source. Though I might be asking a silly question and it has been there all along, only I've missed it :)

I believe only the Project magma developpers are allowed to have the source code :)

I really don't know anything about the Magma project or its situation, I came here from Wikipedia after reading that "Development of the Myth Series was halted by Bungie, but fan groups have been given access to the source code and have taken it upon themselves to keep the series up to date".

My project constitutes a fan group -all of us consider Myth one of the better games ever made- and we wish to implement Myth support. The original or official source code would be an enormous asset saving months of time.

Yeah I think Zeph is right. Project Magma just keeps Myth updated. Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth II: Soulblighter were created by Bungie and sold the rights to TakeTwo. So it isn't open source. But now that you found Myth. You should play the demo and maybe get yourself a copy of the game.

I am the lead of a project REMAKING a number of games, open-source.

who owns myth II now? still take2 ?

I don't think so. Bungie still lists I & II on their site, and Wiki puts it as that they "lost the franchise rights to Take 2 Interactive". This implies that the titles prior to III are still theirs.

Unless something happened in the recent year or so, TakeTwo still owns Myth. That includes all 3 of them. Bungie made the first two and then sold the rights to TakeTwo when they were being bought by Microsoft.

The reason Bungie has those two listed is because they made them. TakeTwo still owns Myth.

Well, I'm not knowledgeable about Myth IP and I won't pretend to be (though I wish for a new Myth game, and I want it to be made by Bungie). The only thing I do know is that Bungie released the Myth II source to the community, and here I am, hoping to learn from it.

Bungie did NOT release the source code to the "community". It is not open source and has never been. There are a few people who have access to the source code, but they do not permission or the legal right to distribute it to you or anyone else.

Bungie DID release the source code to the Myth II gameserver to the public - you can find it at thetain.totalcodex.net, but that is not the game itself, it is th game server that people can use to find and join games with other Mythers.

btw, do you have a workable game or beta and people developing this game, or are you still in the planning/brainstorming phases of this game engine project?

Ah, ok, that's different then, Well, the only things I really need are actually specifications for data and resource files, not the entire code base, though it would have been interesting to peruse them.

As for out project, we're far beyond planning and have running applications for level editors etc for Warhammer: Dark Omen. Nothing is published yet because we want fundamental game play implemented before going public.

I have Warhammer : dark omen on the Playstation, it was fun game :)

Yeah, it was (and is)! Of course, I am biased, but I consider it the finest RTT game ever made! It is much better still on PC since you have better control of your units.

If you want to play it again, I really recommend you to visit some of our boards, our community isn't very large yet, perhaps only 20 to 30 people, but we haven't advertised much beyond in the Mark of Chaos boards (because many people waiting for a Dark Omen 2 were so bitterly disappointed with MoC).

Are you saying you want to produce a game with a clone of the Myth gameplay?

Most regimental RTT games (such as Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle, Gettysburg!, Shadow of the Horned Rat, Dark Omen, Myth and Total War) share similar mechanics. There are units divided into regiments that can take formations. Units have strengths and weaknesses that can be represented numerically and equipment affecting these values.

The goal of the project is not a perfect remake of any one game, but rather to support the rules, units and maps from all supported games.

Thus, no, it will not be a perfect remake of Myth or Myth II. It will, however, hopefully allow you to meet Dark Omen's Grudgebringers and Undead Chariots in battle with your Dwarf grenadiers on maps from any game with rules and gameplay that will be familiar and satisfactory.
