New textures you say? Tell me more sir!

"Note: The detail textures feature that will be part of Myth II 1.7 final is not ready for the public beta because we do not yet have all the levels textured."

Does this mean new and improved colormaps or something?

Nope.

Okay... Detail Textures work only with OpenGL rendering and if you have the preference box "Landscape Textures" checked. Then run a map that has them and you will see a difference. The way it works is that a layer of textures is placed over the normal color map giving it a detailed look. You can still play the same map with someone who doesn't have this pref box checked. Pressing F11 will toggle it off/on if the pref box is checked. Since you don't have the plugin with the dtexs then F11 won't do anything.

I get all misty eyed, thinking of the cracks and textures I used to put on my shadow maps to try and do this kind of thing.
Okay I got the models but now I'm too dumb to do anything with 'em

High quality textures and units are having a having a high priority on my wishlist!
I think it would also attract a lot of new people (who might stay) to the game. After all, would you download the demo of a game that looks like it's 10 years old? (yes I know it is, but still). I'm sure the myth demo would be downloaded alot more times if everything looked better!

afaik 1.7 has detailed Map textures, but nothing specific to units. The units are all 2D 60x80 bitmaps (mostly - at least the old Bungie ones are in that ballpark) so there's no way to add textures to them, they have to be recreated and rerendered and reimported from scratch.

More like 50x60 actually. "High res" would constitute renders around 90+ pixels tall.

Where did you hear that? Like VR said, there are no detail textures for units.

there are some new or remodeled units which feature much higher resolution bitmaps which shrink down in game but when zoomed in on arguably could be said to have 'textures' (the heron guard project was in the forums here a few months back). Technically not seperate textures like on the colormaps, but still, there is enough detail to see the 'texture' used in the model the 2D image is from, so it is possible to have more detailed units.

The improved rendered units projects I have heard of are completely unrelated to Myth 1.7.

yeah, I know, I'm just pointing out that there are better looking units in the works, as well as detail textures.
