I've got 1.7 installed and the tutorial and MP play okay, but single player isnt even available...its greyed out...
anyone seen this or know how to enable it?

When you installed Myth 2, did you do a "large install"? You might have picked the "small install" which only places some of the game files on your computer and the CD is needed for the rest. Install Myth 2 and do a large install. Then re-update to the latest version.

i did a complete install..but I will try again..

Nah the directory shouldn't matter at all. As long as all the myth 2 files are in the same Myth 2 home directory, the game should run locally from that folder, regardless of what root that Myth 2 folder is in.
What it sounds like to me, is you've somehow managed to do the 'Multiplayer Only' install option, which greys out "New Game" and doesnt install many of the files required to play the solo campaign.
Best bet I'd suggest is wiping M2 off the comp and doing a fresh install, or better yet if you've got the CD, do a _manual_ install by copying all the foundation tags, all the original patches, and the apps themselves to your own custom Myth 2 directory.

Another possibility is that you might have two Myth II folders. One is the one you recently installed. The other could be in the default location and somehow you are still using the shortcut for that one.
