Inventory Controllable in Unit Trading Phase

Post by Phex »

Hi,

i am just wondering if this is desired or not: During the unit trading phase it is possible to switch a unit's inventory, which means you can change the item the unit is currently "using". I have no idea if it has always been like this, I just think it makes no sense since units are otherwise uncontrollable... so why can I switch their inventory? In most cases this won't have any effect on a game but I don't like the idea that you can do more than trading or distributing units in the unit trading phase. Also a script that checks for a unit's inventory (which is admittedly rate in multiplayer) could maybe get broken.

I recognized this behaviour while playing Special Forces 2, where I could change my soldiers equipment in unit trading phase.

regards,
Phex

This does sound like a bug. I will look at fixing it for 1.7.2.

Myrd, could you fix the bug, but leave this behavior in as an option? I think it could be useful for changing the gametype via scripting after the game has started (respawning on/off, spawn locations, ect)

Just don't take away Inventory Control completely away from Planning Time. That's how DeadFall let's you choose your unit... and being able to choose unit to play before Planning Time ends so everyone is ready to roll when the game starts can be the difference between life and undeath. sometimes a few seconds is the difference between breaking through the zombie lines to safety and getting overwhelmed.

Why can't the map give you those extra seconds before the zombies come instead?

Also, the mapmaker can just use regular unit trading for this..

The maps were not designed with this in mind, and it wasn't the reason I posted that post a few posts back, but I would like an option to keep this if that's possible. A map action, or clickbox or whatever.

I actually can think of some really cool ideas that could be done using said method.

Given that we created the whole inventory feature, there's no hard & fast rules over how it should behave during planning/unit trading. Personally I see more value in keeping it unchanged, as it fits the whole idea of planning time - getting your units distributed, deciding on a strategy and getting ready for battle.

Then again, I don't play anymore :)

Some useful unit trading options have been created over the years...
phex in civil war epic you had the pick what kind of troop selection PT... which was cool the whole layout of your forces was picked in one simple UT click.

bugs or features should follow one rule if it ain't broke don't fix it... allow people to build what they may if it doesn't crash or stop or limit game play I say cool another way to get creative.

and as for IRON... play myth its fun! really! Realy fun.
if one does not learn from the failings of the past they are likely to suffer its return.

I guess enough arguments have been made for keeping it unchanged.

Basically, it's been this way for a while, and it's not de-balanced anything that I am aware of.

Being able to choose a units inventory during planning time seems like a good thing to have. It gives you a chance to set up your units during planning time and be ready to go when the game starts. Dont take this away, please leave it in as an option at least.
or just leave it be as you said heh.

What about things that charge/drain when equipped?

Then the mapmaker should take that into consideration and prevent any negative or unwanted behavior from happening via script or otherwise.
