How many pixels distance can ranged units shoot?
How many pixels distance can ranged units shoot?
For designing a colormap, has anyone figured-out approximately how many pixels distance (on flat ground) the various ranged units can shoot/throw? Bowman, dwarf, fetch, etc.

Since pixels on a screen varies by screen resolution, I assume you mean pixels on the colormap - if that's the case this thread says it's 8 pixels per world unit, which is equivalent to 1 meter in the real world.

If you are going to try to measure it/test that claim, don't forget elevation significantly changes the distance missle units can shoot.

Thanks. So perhaps if I learn how to use Fear I can examine the archer, dwarf, etc units and maybe that will tell me how many world units their range is?vinylrake wrote:it's 8 pixels per world unit
When I make my color map, I want to make sure certain features on it are inside/outside the range of various ranged units.

You should be able to yeah. make sure you take into account the farthest range(IIRC, this has to do with the height gain advantage for ranged units.)jason_ac wrote:Thanks. "world units" are the values listed in Fear, so yes if you open up a unit's tag in Fear you can see what their range is.jason_ac wrote:Thanks. Another pretty simple way to check distances is to draw a sketch of your map actual size and load that into Loathing and put some missle units on it and see if you have the scale right. and by 'sketch' I mean exactly that. Same your a sketch as a bitmap and use that as your colormap no textures just lines where things will be. You can test. re-edit/extract/re-import-to-loathing until you get the scale exactly the way you want it - then you have a blueprint for your map itself.
Also, I am sure you'll see it mentioned in a lot of the mapmaking tutorials, but for water and elevation if you are trying to be precise you can't go wrong by starting with the diagonal-grid map template. It's the same resolution as Loathing so it will tell you where one terrain can start and another ends (water to land for ex, so you don't end up with undulating land or water that burns) or where the edge of a wall/model can be.
Re: How many pixels distance can ranged units shoot?
Yeah, I already knew I'd have to do that at some point because there will be elevations on the map.vinylrake wrote:Another pretty simple way to check distances is to draw a sketch of your map actual size and load that into Loathing and put some missle units on it and see if you have the scale right.

I'll have to do some more reading Don't know what that template is. But I understand wanting to line up to Loathing's geometry.

Since nobody has directed you there yet... you'll find the values inside the monster tag. Open the monster tag in question, then in the little window listing it's attacks, double click on the attack in question. A sub window will pop up with a bunch of fields. Max and Min range are two of them.

Here's an article that explains what it is and how to use it - I just updated the download links so you can grab the grid/template.jason_ac wrote:[...I'll have to do some more reading Don't know what that template is. But I understand wanting to line up to Loathing's geometry.

Awesome, thanks! You know the last image in the article is broken, right?vinylrake wrote:Here's an article that explains what it is and how to use it - I just updated the download links so you can grab the grid/template.

Ah, I see several posts disappeared out of this thread. At least none of them had much value, I think
