1.8 Patch Does Nothing on Ubuntu 14.04

I've recently been struck by an urge to play Myth, so I went and dug out Myth 2 CD to try to install on my Ubuntu install. After much kludging, I finally got the install scripts from the CD working, and then went to download your 1.8 patch figuring I would get things up to date before trying to start anything. I went to launch the installer... nothing. Ran the installer from the command line... nothing. Ran the installer under sudo... nothing. Perhaps I'm being incredibly thick, but running the 1.8 patch installer seems to have no effect whatsoever.

When you say, "nothing" - do you mean literally nothing? i.e. nothing happens at all with no output in the terminal if you run from the command-line?
