One other way is to change melee attacks so they are actually projectiles that are 'thrown' a very short distance, then give your unit a special ability which destroys projectiles in a small radius around it.

What OS are you running? Things to check are if there is anything in your local folder, and if (immediately after a 'crash') your myth_log.txt file contains any hints to the problem, unlikely but worth a shot.
